Where's the action?

I 'm reading the book "Takedown", which mentions the early days of Unix, the ARPA net etc. There were communities of computer pioneers in and near academic centers that were fanatically pursing the next generation of computer technology.

Are there such communities today? And what are they doing?

Not so much nowadays. Back in the good ol' days you had to be at places like MIT, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, etc, for all that. But the interwebs helped to disperse all those communities. There's still activity at those places, but nothing like there used to be. Corporations have a bigger hand in this kind of activity now too, which is another difference.

Any dissenting opinions from MIT, Berkley, Caregie Mellon, etc.?

Or did you all go into genetic engineering or stuff like that?

As a Berkeley alum, I can vouch for at least one of those.
