Before installing tarballs in Fedora, you need to have, at a bare minimum, the following
yum install gcc gcc-c++ make automake kernel-devel
This will pull in some other things as well.
I don't remember anything too special about awesome.
Of course, I might have just installed it in Ubuntu and used alien to make it into an rpm. Hrrm, I see on this CentOS box I have an awesome x86_64 rpm. Not sure if I built it or just used alien from a Debian package.
