The best way that I've found to fix it so far is to use the compat-wireless drivers.

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download

The kernel developers broke the driver around 2.6.30 or so and haven't fixed it yet. 2.6.32 kernel *sometimes* works better, but so far, it seems only the compat-wireless people have it working steadily.

Not if you use compat-wireless.
What happens is that it installs a better driver, replacing the one that you have, and modprobe looks for it first.

When you want to try the next kernel attempt at it, you just uninstall it.

FWIW, the latest Rawhide kernel does somewhat better, but still about half speed when compared to the compat-wireless drivers.

There are pretty complete instructions on their pages, though you have to dig around a little to find it.
