it may be simple...

I always have to use 'alsamixer' to get the card going initially after an installation. Once things are set, I use 'alsactl store' so the configuration is saved. Normally, the system keeps those settings from that point on - whether it reloads the settings each time it boots or not, I don't know.
However, just today I had to deal with the issue again - with the KDE update to 4.3.4, suddenly, the only audio device now listed is "pulseaudio", and of course, I had no sound. As soon as I did 'alsactl restore' everything began working again.

PulseAudio is evil. After a fresh install of FC12 I tried everything to get my sound to work. The only way I got to work, finally, was to remove it. I have no plans to reinstall it.

No need. That's because back then they were very problematic. Just like PulseAudio is now. I admit I was being a little dramatic. But just I want to use my computer. I don't have time to spend a whole weekend making a complex solution to a simple problem work.

Just let me know when PulseAudio is actually working properly with Fedora 12 and I'll give it a go.

It works fine in the majority of cases. We can't fix the cases where it doesn't if the sum total of information provided is 'it didn't work so I turned it off'. Good as the PulseAudio and kernel audio developers are, they aren't magical and can't figure out what's wrong if no-one takes the small effort required to provide the necessary information.

I understand. I'm sure it works great for some people. As I said, I was just being dramatic in my post. I did provide detail on symptoms in another thread on this topic with no suggestions in reply that helped. I tried various suggestions in the posts you linked. Everything just worked when I removed PulseAudio. Ultimately, I had to stop spending hours on trying to get to work with PulseAudio and move on with life. I really did try, and I did seek assistance, so please don't assume I didn't. I think you can find my posts using the search function. I understand some of the benefits of PulseAudio, so I may go back to it sometime and try again to get it working when I have a few hours to kill on a Saturday morning.

The point is we can't 'advise you when it works' because the reason why it doesn't work is something specific to your configuration. If you don't file bugs with the information recommended in those pages, we have no way to track the issue and a) actively work on fixing it and b) know when it's fixed in order to tell you.
