Printer installation problems

This is my first experience with a linux OS and I'm loving the system so far, but I'm tripping up on some basics and need some advice.
I have installed Fedora 12 and I read up to download and install HPLIP for my HP Photosmart C4380. I thought I'd conquered the installation but unfortunately my enthusiasm was short lived. If I try to print I now get a message that states 'Cups missing filter' and the print file just stays in the queue.
Can anyone advise me on my next step?

Yes I've been right through the process up to the hp-setup command, and I get:-

[neil@neil-pc Desktop]$ hp-setup

Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Not sure what my next step is now

Just to add a bit of information to see if it helps:-
I used the gnome printer configuration to delete the printer and re-install. The system searches for the driver and then states:-

Printer 'Photosmart-C4380-series' requires the 'foomatic-rip-hplip' program but it is not currently installed. Please install it before using this printer.

I was wondering if the foomatic-rip-hplip program was missing because the hplip installation stopped short?
If so, how do I get around the problem?
