SiS900 pci Fast Ethernet

Total Newbie! --> Please Help

Installed Fedora Core 2 on Celeron 660mz 256 ram share video
created 400 mg swap.

log in as root.

Network through D-link 614 with wire, 4 other computers, win boxes exist on the network and Sympatico (provider) DSL.

I can see a Windows Network icon if I go click computer and Network, but nothing beyond it.

If I go System Settings, Network configuration, I get:
Devices --> profile is checked
Status is Inactive
Device is eth 0
Nickname is eth 0
Type is ethernet

If I click on Activate in the top bar it returns the following...

sis 900 device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

Cancel or Ok (There should be a Fix button )

So it doesn't see the net nor the network?

Any ideas?

(a few hours later)

Well since not too many ideas were flowing in, I decided to add in an another network card. A 5 year old 3com I had lying around.
No more error message.
Stripped the firewall.
Removed the SiS from config but it keeps coming back at boot up.
After a few tweaks of the Network I could see the D-link.
After a few more tweaks I was at Cnn. com.
After a few more I could see the network.

Not that I could get on the other machines. But I have a few samba tricks to learn. God this is fun. And to think I was doing this with Dos 3.1 15 years ago!

Bottom line, I would like to hear of anyone using the onboard SiS 900 Nic with Fedora 2. I don't think it'll happen.
Last-nite and for the last 3 years I've been using it with XP.
Never had a problem.
Don't use SiS 900 with Fedora core 2.

I'm using one right now. My only problem is that I sometimes have difficulty downloading.

I'm not familar with that other card, but 3com generally works well.

It seems like you fixed your major problem yourself. Good job.

I have an Asus Board with that NIC AND Sound and neither of them work. I'm just getting started with this problem... If I get it to work I will let you know. Asus has a driver for the board that supposedly works for linux... I'm a newbie so I have to figure out how to install drivers. If anyone has any suggestions holla at me.
