Confusion regarding X.org versions....

I see X listed as version 1.7 or version 7.5 - what exactly is being referred to here?

I stumbled upon this trying to get my ATI HD3870 working with the fglrx driver in F12, only to find that the driver is only good until version 7.4.

What is being referred to with X.org version 1.7 and version 7.5?

There is a difference between the nominal version of the X.Org X11 Window System (R7.5 or whatever) and the X.Org X11 server (1.7 or so).

So the x.org server is a component of the X Window System?

Yes. It is the server program that provides the display/interfaces with
display drivers.

The X11 part is the protocol version (release 7), and usually refers to
the entire collection of applications, libraries, and the X server. Each
application and library may have its' own version, but is cross compatible
with all releases of X11r7.

The server version number (at least mine) is X.Org X Server 1.6.3.901 (1.6.4 RC 1) and is just the display server application.
