Gnome Panel weirdness in FC2

I am slowly but surely loseing the various elements from my gnome panel.

When I upgraded to FC2 I lost all the launchers I created, I lost the ability to control my gnome panel and one by one, my applets are disappearing.

None of the default launchers work, so I can't launch the Redhat Menu for example. The workspace switcher has changed from 2x2 to 2x1 (cols x rows) even though there are still 4 workspaces. In the course of typing this mail, I've lost up2date and mail checker. This happened when I tried to check the reproducibility of the errors.

The real interesting bit is that I don't get these problems on my other user setup, just my main one. Is there some sort of permissions thing going on in the background?

I'm going to turn off my backups tonight (I rsync to another hd and I don't want to --delete my old FC1 desktop).

Any pointers to a solution would be appreciated. Cheers.

PS, I also get the XKB error message for every user.

Unhappy

An update.

I think that the source of the problem is lack of per-user menu editing in FC2.

I've got crossover office and netbeans installed on my machine. If I remove the user vfolder file and leave the vfs modules set to 'without-menu-editing' it appears to work. But I lose all my development tools More importantly all the menus are in a bit of a mess with multiple entries and stuff appearing in the wrong location. For instance I can start gLabels from the Applications folder in Preferences. What's a copy of Applications doing in Preferences in the first instance?

The updated applications.menu file seems to have been dumped from my install. When I find that I'll try re-establishing the menus, and then see what happens.
