How did you fix the problem?
I'm trying to set up Skype on Windows and on Fedora 12. I also fail the video feed but I think the mic is working.

Thanks! I needed just that information too.
In fact, I went one better. In my top panel, I added a launcher for Skype. For the command, I used your command, and now it launches with video just fine.

My terminal just sits there after running this command. Does it take a while or am I doing something wrong?

According to the KPackageKit (I am not familiar with Yum commands yet), it looks like I have libv4l-0.6.3-1.fc12(i686) installed. Am I missing anything else?

What is the output of lsusb? Have you seen if there is any other information related to your particular webcam? Please post the output of uname -a as well.

I think I saw somewhere that the issue may be the camera trying to run at too high of a resolution (2.0 Megapixels). How do I reduce that?

Unfortunately, that is beyond my scope of experience. I hope that some other kind soul in here can help you. Have you been able to search other (possibly non-Fedora) sites for hints about your web cam? I would try that.
For example, perhaps something here may help:
http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/
Good luck.

I finally managed to get it to work.. in Windows.
Mind you, the video never worked, only the Mic and even that was starting to give me trouble. But it IS a Microsoft webcam, and Microsoft doesn't do anything unless there is competition!
I took my son's el-cheap-o digital camera that also works as a webcam, and plugged it in and tried it in Skype. I was surprised, Skype detected it with no problems. Unfortunately there is no mic on the el-cheap-o camera.
So I plugged the Microsoft back in figuring I could use it's Mic and the el-cheap-o for video.
'Lo and behold, Skype suddenly recognizes the Microsoft webcam and it works perfectly! I unplugged the el-cheap-o one and the Microsoft webcam worked fine. I'll see if I have to do that every time, or if it will work now.
So, of course I need to get it working in Linux. I wonder if Gnome would be a better installation for it or not (different libraries, etc.)?
Curiouser and curiouser.

Thanks to cr.tauro for the recommendation made on 2009-11-25, 06:14 PM CST:
“In the terminal run.....
env LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype”
WebCam and Skype now getting along just fine. ~cc

Ha, now I found out why the Mic worked... the laptop has one built in that I didn't realize! So when the Mic was working, it was the laptop's built-in Mic working, not the webcam.
So I can make calls, just can't send video. Oh well, better than nothing.

Re: webcam and Skype
I have the exact same problem, skype worked with my Philips cam right out of the box, but
at some point it stopped. When in skypes options, if I press on the "test" button the cam tries
to turn on (I can tell, because it has a light) but nothing happens. However, when the cam tries
to turn on, I get this in the terminal from where I started skype:
Code:
X Error, request 132, minor 18, error code 8 BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
I used this to start skype up in the first place:
Code:
env LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype
The cam works perfectly fine with cheese though.
