You would probably only be interested in re-building the *compiz*, emerald*, and *fusion* stuff, not the rest (unless forced by deps). RPM re-build prerequisites would include the standard compilers and such, as well as X11 development packages and related, and of course RPM build tools. Even so: yes, that's a fair amount of work. It appears to me that no particular re-build order is required - although I'd start with the basics (libcompizconfig, compiz, ccsm, and work up from there).
You might try the 32-bit stuff first, just for giggles, to see if there's any chance it might work (I might be wrong, you know...).

Wrong.
Build order ( install as you build to meet deps, force is need for the main compiz package )
1. compiz
2 . bcop
3. plugins-main
4. plugins-extras
5. plugins-unsupported
6. libcompizconfig
7. compizconfig
8. ccsm
9. backends
10. fusion-icon
11. emerald
12. emerald-themes
The eyemagnet repo also contains other packages that need replacing i.e xorg server.

I stand corrected on that point. Actually: I'm personally much more interested to know for sure if 32-bit C-F is or is not workable on 64-bit OS.

So, I found that I can simply do:
yum install compiz
and along with a few changes to xorg.conf, I apparently have compiz installed and working. (This page gives the list of changes to xorg.conf: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/Compiz
I don't seem to be able to find the settings manger, however. I tried yum install ccsm - no luck. If I do compiz --help, I get this:
Usage: compiz [--display DISPLAY] [--bg-image PNG] [--refresh-rate RATE]
[--fast-filter] [--indirect-rendering] [--direct-rendering]
[--strict-binding] [--xgl-binding] [--test-mode]
[--replace] [--sm-disable] [--sm-client-id ID] [--version]
[--help] [PLUGIN]...
Which doesn't tell me much. I'm currently searching for more useful information on executing it.

So: 32-bit C-F works on a 64-bit CentOS OS ? Wow - I'm surprised. That surely saves you a lot of goofing around anyway. Good stuff. Thanks for reporting.

Ah: you installed the "stock" C-F stuff from the CentOS repos, not that eyemagnet repo - I assumed from the beginning that you had already tried the "stock" stuff and either didn't find it, or found it lacking.

You are exactly right, Hlinger. The stock compiz is less than impressive. Less than interesting, actually. It seems to only supply wobbly windows and desktop cube. I want my desktop snow storm! 8^)
I may revisit the rebuilding again...
