can not activate eth0 but can surf in the internet

Hi,
When I activate eth0, the system says that the eth0 seems not exist. However, I can surf in the internet. Who can tell me what is the matter and how to solve the problem, thanks in advance.

From the command line post the output of nm-tool

Can you ping your router, other sites?

Edit: My bad I thought you couldn't surf the net

Nm-tool will probably state that eth0 is activated, the reason is Network manager is controlling it.
if you right click on the try icon connection information it probably states Auto eth0.
If you dont want Network manager to control it you need to go to System>Administration>Network and uncheck the box controlled by network manager.
