Unhappy Windows appear too large for screens, when I click anyplace on the screen it "jumps".

I have run into this problem with most of the programs I run on my ACER aspire one netbook. Upon opening a window in Fedora 11 the window extends beyond the top or bottom of the screen. Moving the panels allows the screen to enlarge but still to big. When I try to click on the screen it jumps top to bottom and back with each click. Nothing seems to work. I can't select a button or menu on screen. Esc does nothing. Most keyboard shortcuts are ineffective. Even using an external monitor makes no difference except that everything is scaled larger. My screen resolution is set properly for both screens. I can sometimes right click on the title bar and try to resize the window but it will only let me size the widths not the height.

I have tried to find any threads pertaining to this issue with no luck though I have searched it many times, many days with different descriptions. It almost seems the computer doesn't know what size to make the windows and is toggling back and forth waiting for me to decide which part I want exposed only I don't know how to make it stop jumping. Very frustrating because it often renders the computer useless for anything and forces me to shut down without closing any windows. I plan on buying a desktop machine but will still like to have this one for travel. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you need to go to a higher resolution. Go to System > Preferences > Display and change to a higher resolution, such as from 800x600 to 1024x768.

well, if you aren't afraid of testing, you could try https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/FedoraMoblin - since it's targeted on netbooks, there shouldn't be such (low resolution related?) problems...

I have an eeepc with a 10" screen at first the windows were too big, I went into the display settings and changed the font sizes and the dpi setting. I ended up with the dpi set to 96 and I have one of the font sizes set to 8 and the others to 6. The smaller font sizes allows a smaller window.

Here is a brief update. I've gone into my display settings and find only the default settings for the small screen available. The computer is a netbook which I bought prior to the release of the 10" screen, this one is the 8.9 and the default resolution is 1024 x 600. When I attach it to a separate larger monitor everything is just scaled larger and still doesn't seem to fit the screen. I took Kernel klink's advice and adjusted the font sizes all the way down to 7 from 10 and the dpi to 96 (which was set for 134). Even with everything set at eyestrain and headache levels the problem persists. I set the dpi all the way down to 70 and still the issue remains. When I get back home I will try the testing method, right now I am in a place with no internet access on my computer because of the company firewall but will post an update at that time.

Typically, for me, issues like this tend to be something simple but the solution is simply overlooked. Like searching for something only to discover it in a different pocket of my jacket where I usually wouldn't put it, or my son tearing up his room looking for his eyeglasses and I find them in the bathroom where he left them when he took a shower.
