Can't disable touchpad on Asus 1005HA netbook

I can't disable my touchpad on my Asus 1005HA netbook running a fully updated F11 i586. I can change other settings, like tapping and scrolling just fine but disabling the touchpad is a no go. Makes it difficult when you're trying to do a lot of typing and the mouse just moves around on you. =)

I've tried hitting the touchpad disable button and running `synclient TouchpadOff=1`, but no dice. Interestingly, though, I can use syndaemon to get my touchpad to disable for a short time while typing. This is an okay solution, but I'd really just like to be able to turn it off on demand.

Any suggestions? I can provide additional information if that would be helpful.

I have the same problem with my Asus X66-series laptop. I already tried adding an (hopefully appropriate) InputDevice section to xorg.conf but I didn't get anything new out of it.

Anyone?

The following shows how to configure tuouchpads. http://fedorasolved.org/Members/khay...earchterm=None

Adding a line with <merge key="input.x11_options.TouchpadOff” type="string">1</merge>
will turn it off.

I use gsynaptics for Gnome and qsynaptics for KDE. gpointing-device-settings does not work for me because it's settings do not stick through a reboot.

I can disable it completely from BIOS settings, but naturally I need to use the pad when I don't have an external mouse at hand.

I know I can achieve what I need with syndaemon or synclient, but the pad is detected as PS/2 mouse, not as synaptics pad.

Tweaking HAL policy or xorg.conf didn't seem to have any effect in this.

Edit: Search from the Web revealed that there are these problems with more Asus models with ElanTech's touchpads.

Seem's related to the following bugs I have seen previously.

Assuming the root cause for our problems here is the faulty detection, this is exactly what we want to keep an eye on: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=549065
