ATI Linux Driver Installation

Hi,

Just installed Fedora 11 64bit - and have successfully installed SciLab - was not too hard - unpack and run.

What i am now stuck on is the ATI driver installation. The installation is based on a script being run, but i am not sure how it is supposed to work - i get the following error :

[root@localhost ATI_Video_Driver]# sh ./ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run
Created directory fglrx-install.RJdo8k
Verifying archive integrity... All good.

Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.RJdo8k

I think that RHEL and SUSE are the only supported distro's, although Fedora is RHEL albeit more advanced (i think this is correct).

I have a few questions :

1. If i install the driver manually - will it work ?
2. To install the driver manually - do i need to modify the script etc., if possible ?.
3. Or do i have to unpack and copy the relevant drivers.

Since i have the default video driver, i seem to be stuck on 1280 x 1024 resolution - monitor can display 1650 x 1050, so the display is looking a bit soft.

Any guidance gratefully received. Thanks.

Regards,

Richard.

Sorry if you find this a bit blunt but there are many threads that answer this. Try searching the forum for answers before you post an issue.

Barf,

Understand what you are saying, but some questions are not answered for fedora 11 - Fedora 10 worked no problems with current buld - fedora 11 did not. Also, new to Linux.

Regards,

Shadders

All ATI drivers below 9.8 are unsupported by F11 due to kernel and Xorg incompatibilities !

All,

Thanks for the feedback and help, much appreciated.

I now know that trying to install an ATI proprietary driver will not work, thanks for the feed back.

I bought a Linux book - didn't get to the section where X.org was detailed as the open source drivers. Hence the links above will help as the book goes through where to get the drivers, but no detail on how to install them - web site provides data, but the links provide extra.

One question i have - if i have burnt an ISO image for F11 64bit, how do i redirect the yum etc., to the DVD rather than the internet - i need to keep an air gap between the PC and network - i.e. never connect it to the internet. Thanks.

Again, thanks for the replies - much appreciated.

Regards,

Richard.

Further to the above, my monitor was stuck on 1280x1024 i did the following :

1. System since last attempt was logging in as text only.
2. Logged in as root - or rather su root
3. Ran the command (which i got from a book) Xorg -configure
4. This started the autodetection feature - and failed... :O(
5. Restarted PC
6. Logged in as root (su)
7. Edited the xorg.conf as per the book i bought to get the basics details in the configuration file - all i had was that the driver was VESA. I changed the config file to include display resolution, colour depth, and a few other very basic commands - hey presto - it worked.
8. Was now able to enable desktop effects - wobbly windows
9. Monitor was detected too.

Q1. What i do not know is why did my manual editing of the xorg.conf file allow the monitor to be detected.

Q2. I do no know what driver is being used as this was not listed in the xorg.conf file.

The book i bought was "The Complete Reference Linux, 6th Edition" by Richard Peterson, publisher McGraw Hill - Osborne.

I recommend this book for a beginner has a lot of useful information.

Regards,

Richard.
