xwindows wont start..."NVIDIA: could not open device file /dev/nvidia0"

there are just too many threads with 100 different solutions and it has become confusing as hell.

I finally got x windows to start with my nvidia card from the liveOS (well not really; system-config-display --set-driver=VESA) . Once I got the os installed I could start x windows with the same VESA support and a decent resolution. I went through and installed the kmod-nvidia no problem. Have all the proper RPMFusion and kernel-devel packages

Starting x failed:
NVIDIA: could not open device file /dev/nvidia0

Then tried the akmod-nvidia with the same problem. Both times booting to the new kernel.

I try:
glxinfo | grep direct

I get:
Error: unable to open display

If I start x back with VESA support I see the nvidia utility so I assume the driver is installed but when I try to run it tells me that I am not using the nvidia driver and to run nvidia-xconfig which I do to no avail

When I check the logs it mentions something about the memory and I wonder if I need to set something based on the onboard mem for the gpu?

PLEASE HELP

Which nvidia card do you have? Are you using the correct driver for it?

Have a look at the nvidia thread in my signature. Many people have needed to blacklist the nouveau driver for the nvidia driver to work. It is covered in there.

Still cannot get the damn nvidia driver to work

I have tried many times to get my pny 9500GT card to work. Each time I reinstall fedora 11 to start fresh. I follow all of the instructions to the letter (There are several different instruction sets and I have tried them all) I am running the PAE kernel.

X wont start once I run nvidia-xconfig.

It says: "failed to load NVIDIA kernel moduel"

I am starting to think that it may not be an nvidia problem but rather my lack of understanding of upgrading a kernel and thus X does not have the proper path to the newly installed nvidia drivers.

PLEASE HELP. When I do a clean install fedora runs great with proper resolution on one display but I need both.

[root@localhost X11]# glxinfo

obviously the driver is still vesa, the nvidia display settings is now in Applications->System Tools but when i run it it informs me:

"You do not appear to be using NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run nvidia-xconfig as root) and restart X server."

Unfortunately when I do this everything breaks.

You are using the PAE kernel did you install the PAE drivers? Thee are 3 options on that thread, 32 bit PAE and 64 bit. You must use the one that matches your kernel.
