Exclamation Plymouth no longer gets to GDM screen, F10

Recently I've noticed that my F10 64-Bit install hangs at the end of the Plymouth boot sequence, its worked fine for months beforehand with vga=792

I tried the spinify plugin which has the same issue as solar, but the fade-in plugin doesn't have the issue - that boots fine, although the password prompt for luks is unreadable (huge as if its the wrong resolution).

boot also works fine without plymouth of course (remove the vga=792, leave rhgb quiet).

solar works fine if I interrupt it by pressing tab or escape whatever it is to see the boot messages.

i've done a few searches and similar issues were supposedly fixed, but i'm running the so-called fixed version 0.6.0, 0.2008.11.17.3.fc10 of plymouth, and frankly if one of the three plugins works, it seems to me its the plugins not plymouth itself at fault.

this is nvidia 8600gt running 185.18.14-1 drivers - which are the same version that i had when it was working, so not related i guess.

Any ideas?

EDIT: just tried an I can ssh in from another machine, so the machine hasn't hung, just plymouth i guess. i can find any processes called plymouth* running, and killing Xorg doesn't clear the screen, there's nothing i can find to do that will get me to the gdm screen, there doesn't appear to be anything interesting in xorg logs or dmesg or gdm logs.

just have to disable plymouth until f12 goes final i guess :-(
