Upgrading from FC1 to FC2

Hey guys

After finally getting my copy of FC2 I tried to upgrade my Fedora tonight but ran into a problem. X refuses to start and keeps telling me that it cannot open the Input device Mouse0. Yet I see the cursor on the screen and it's moving around..

How can I get X to reconfigure my mouse, as the failsafe reconfig that kicks in after x fails a couple of times does nothing.

I tried restarting Kudzu.. nothing .. tried rebooting and waiting for the reconfigure thing to happen after viewing the loggs that X gave me .. ... and it still breaks..

I don't know what to do anymore.. even started browsing around the conf files.. but it looks fine ..

The error in the X dump is:
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Mouse0" No core pointer

Can someone help... ? please

Logon as root and do the following -
cd /
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Change the following - line

Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"

to

Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

Once changed, hit esc, then type :wq
then enter.
Reboot

Sweet .. worked fine.. but after that the troubles just got worse.. The screen started to giving me hassel and then the sound card..

So I format and re-installed the damn thing from clean.. and now everything is working like a dream.

The upgrade option from Fedora 1 to 2 is almost there.. just a a couple of minor things.. But I can reccomend a clean install, it's much better..

Is there a way that you can tel KDE not to try and Auto-mount the CD everytime that you log on.
I am not sure but maybe I must take the entry out of fstab.... or is it mtab...

Thanks a million for that reply HarryC

You bet . For the automount, yeah post the contents of your /etc/fstab file and we'll take a look. Basically you should see a line like the below for each cdrom drive. Make sure the 'noauto' parameter is there.

/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

Oh, and here's a nice little primer for fstab, might help you someday.

i have a similair question? i am thinking of changing fc2 to sme server. for an easy set up with minimal commands. it seems to be easier to set up as a home server?
is it best if i format the drives first or try and install over the top??
regards
Vinny

But it is like that

Well I had a look at my fstab and it is like you say.. no auto on it... What I am wanting to avoid happening is the following..

When I boot.. and then log on to my box the little bouncing CD comes up right after all the pannels has loaded..

If I log off and back on again .. the same thing happens.. even if there is no CD....

If I pop a CD in my drive.. Autorun just kills my machine with Konquror and sometimes crashes the app that I was busy with..

Like here is a example:

I try to add KDE-games to my machine... it asks for CD2.. I pop it in and konqurere just takes over .. I try to go back to the install .. not response.. So I kill it with the Cntrl+Atl+Esc scull .. and end up rebooting so I can just lose the process and try again..

I want to disable this autorun thing.. Let the drive mount the new volume.. but not give me a browser window of the thing... I'll browse to the CD when I need it.. it's a BIG fat icon on my Desktop.. it's rather easy I think .. just double click..

But as you asked.. here is my fstab file.. if it shed's any light on the subject..

Does the light stay on the CDROM drive while this bouncing CD is occuring? Does the light always stay on? Can you try another CDROM drive or minimally another IDE cable or IDE port? This is not normal behavior for the drive in question. Can you describle your computer? Am mainly interested in motherboard and drives...what do you have and positions. Also run DMESG and post any errors associated with that drive.

Attached is the output of the DMESG.. and there is something about the hdc that looks weird ..

I biuld the machine myself, and must say that Fedora 1 had no prblems like this.. The light does stay on when the autorun runs .. but after that it goes off.. I have 2 HDD on the primary IDE and the CDROM/DVD Drive} on the master second IDE..

I am using a VIA APOLLO KT133 Board with a AMD K7 1000Mhz Chip. I must say that the CDROM/DVD is a weird make, Arztec 14X but seems to work fine with MPlayer... which I still have to install on the fresh copy of FC2

The system has only 128Mb of RAM. I use the onboard sound and network chip from VIA but have a Savage 4 in the AGP slot... and this is all piped via a small 56K modem to you... as you are reading this..

FC1 did not continue to aotomount the cdrom like FC2... but maybe the drivers have been updated and don support my CRDOM/DVD so nicely anymore..

Hope you can make sens of all this.. thanks for for the effort and time so far dude..

I can't see any errors associated with hdc in your log. I don't know, try another drive if possible or perhaps another kernel. Try a fresh install of FC2.

Talking

The current install is a fresh one.. so I don't see how a re-install will fix the problem. You said something about another kernel.. How would I do that.. ? I am will to ry another kernel if possible but I am a little reluctant to re-install Fedora again.. Maybe I should just wait for Fedora 3 and see if that is better.

I'll also try another drive, but in the end I would put the DVD back again as it is the only DVD drive I have right now.

I have been wanting to buy a new DVD for a while now, and this could just be the convincing factor. Any suggestions on a good DVD drive would be welcome.

Thanks for all the help so far, you have been most helpfull. I only hope that one day I would also be able to assit people like you do, but for now I am still learning Fedora... and so far i really like what i see

Have yourself a great day HarryC

So you managed a clean install. You should immediately install all of the updates via yum. There are kernel upgrades and updates for Xorg as well. The mouse problem is caused by the kernel. I had that problem also when upgrade from fc1 (don't attempt it). Once you install the new kernel and make sure you make it you defualt kernel so it gets loaded at boot, most of your problems should go away. Then we can get down to the fun stuff

Supernerd...

So i take you advice and install a new kernel and boom, my box doesn even boot.
Old kernel: kernel#2.6.5-1.358
New kernel: kernel#2.6.8-1.521

I also upgraded my Xorg but that seemd not to make much of a diffrence... I am guessing that I jumped ahead a bit much.. So Iĺl just have to remove the new one and try another kerenel.. any suggestions.. ?

By the way.. I am using apt instead of yum.. as I like apt a bit more..
I am noe trying kernel#2.6.6-1.435 ... hope that works

Eagerly awaiting your reply..
