Angry screen resolution issues in fc11

I have an HP pavilion dv6000 series that I put fc11 on this last weekend. everything works fine except that I cant resize the screen. I'm stuck at 1280x800. When I run apps with specific screen sizes in full screen they are crammed up into the top right corner with a lot of black screen around. I have googled the hell out of this and come up with nothing.

this is my xrandr -q output
[
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS1 connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm
   1280x800 60.0*+
TV1 unknown connection (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
Thanks for your help.

I don't seem to understand your point. I looked-up the specs of your machine and 1280x800 is the default and best resolution for your display. Since this is a lcd, it is not recommended to use a different resolution. Your display is wide screen, so if you use a different resolution than 1280x800, the black screen around the display is expected.

The issue is not for my every day use, the problem is when I want to use software that full screens and cant change the resolution. For instance Starcraft runs in a 640x480 window. As it is now I get a 640x480 window in the top left of my screen and the rest is useless. in fc9 wine would resize the screen to 640x480 and Starcraft took up the whole screen.

I saw this tip posted on the Mandriva Forums. Maybe it will help.

One way to get better refresh rate of your display
