P4p800 & Fc1

I assume people have gotten a P4P800 motherboard to work with FC1. I am not one of those people...

I have a pretty basic machine: P4P800, 2.6, ATI9800. I get FC1 installed no problem but when it boots I get issues with the firewire controller (it just stops) and other things like not being able to launch firstboot (screen just freezes).

Before I start pasting error messages, does anyone have any initial suggestions about something I might be doing wrong?

Read through that; there' s a comment from someone who fixed this problem with the latest ATI drivers.

So it looks like it is FC1 and the ATI 9800 causing the problem. Not that I can fix it based on what I read.

Well, what video drivers to you currently have installed - the stock XFree86 ones shipped with FC or ATI-specific ones? Did you try out the ATI latest drivers from their website?

There's also a link to another bugzilla entry in that bug I posted above with detailed instructions on what that preson did to fix the problem.

I got it working! Yes - the ones that shipped with FC1 didn't work so well. Here is what I did to get it working:

1. Booted to single user mode
2. Ran XFree86 -configure (created XF86Config.new)
3. Ran XFree86 -xf86config //XF86Config.new
4. That made X boot
5. Exited out of X
6. Installed the ATI driver based on 4.3 XFree86 version as per the instructions on the ATI site.
7. Rebooted (I think it installs a new kernel module)
8. X started fine

The firewire controller also gave me problems but I just left my external firewire disk drive in while it boots and it's fine.

In terms of the onboard NIC, the driver supplied with the ASUS mobo worked fine - instructions weren't so great.

Glad you got things going. X display problems can be a nightmare to troubleshoot! Hopefully this info will be useful for someone else.
