Thinkpad Standby/Suspend

Hi:

I've installed Fedora on my Thinkpad T40, and have been having some problems with power management.

I've configured some settings in KLaptop, and apparently, I am using ACPI, which I have heard mixed things about compared to APM. The problem is that even when I enable standby and resume in the KLaptop application, and manually select suspend, it just displays some output to a console and returns to the desktop a few seconds later.

Worse yet, I can't for the life of me figure out how to put the system into standby. I've also tried setting behavior when the lid closes, but nothing seems to happen either?

Can anyone help? Thanks!

I had the same problem with my IBM T40, and my Compaq Armada M700. As I understand it ACPI and APM are still not ver well implemented in Linux, given great hardware differences amongst laptop producers. This should be addressed in later kernels.

I haven't tried it, but I have heard that Mandrake 10 has, overall, much better support for laptops.

You might want to look here http://tuxmobil.org/apm_linux.html for information on Linux power management.

Good Luck!

APM has been "standard" in Linux distributions for quite some time, so APM itself isn't usually the problem. wseberger is pretty well on the mark except for this mis-statement. ACPI is very new and ... has issues.

I actually got my T41 to correctly suspend 5 or 6 times with ACPI, until I tried to show it to the company's IT guy - whereupon it promptly locked up.
