ati-driver-installer-9-8-x86.x86_64.run

I'm trying to install the newest ATI driver and keep getting:

you need to run this installer as the super-user

Basically, I try the su -, enter the password but then can't get back to the download file. I've tried dropping the file in the root folder, says I don't have access. Any suggestions of how I can get this thing loaded?

thanks in advance for any help

What do you mean ? Where did you dump the binary when you downloaded it ?? I wouldn't know! Simply change directory ('cd') to that folder (wherever it is) after logging into terminal as root, then execute...

P.S. You are aware that you need kernel-devel package (matching running kernel), latest kernel-headers, plus gcc and make ???

I guess I did forget that part of where the file is located...it's in the download folder. So I'm at root but when I do an ls, it shows no folders, including the download folder. I'm sure this is easy but I'm very new to linux/unix and really don't know the commands that well so any help with what to do would be appreciated.

thanks
frank

OK, well then, the downloaded binary file is almost certainly located in your normal user's $HOME download folder, which would typically be: /home/<username>/Downloads
Or is it maybe: /home/<username>/Download
without the 's' on the end ?

So, as root user:
cd /home/<username>/Downloads

Insert your normal user's name (case-sensitive, omit angle-brackets). Then proceed to execute it.
