Xorg causes high CPU load

When I check system processes as root with:

su -
gnome-system-monitor

I notice that Xorg is consuming a lot of cpu.

Variables between 6 and 75 % of cpu load at an interval of a few seconds.
I even get some cpu loads near 100%.

This causes my system to function properly.

Please help.

Specific information about your video hardware type and motherboard/memory/processor and what video driver you are using would be helpful.
