How to boot Fedora? (Usual kernel update ****)

Today Fedora shows "security update" available and I installed it (it included kernel update). After restart computer don't boots - just silently hangs even not showing GRUB.

I take installation DVD, boot it in rescue mode and see that drive is OK and all data present, but I have no idea how to "rescue" system manualy.

Can somebody give appointments to me?

Hello antsr,

A busted GRUB boot loader after an update is not unheard of. But lately the blinking cursor by itself is sort of a new twist. Anyway, the procedure is the same and has been working for it. Here is the HOWTO on the subject. If you're not interested in the speculations on why, just skip down to the end of the first post for links to other threads with the basic steps to re-install GRUB in various places and ways depending on your situation...

Exact same issue here after latest kernel update, just mentioned in another post. Thanks for pointers on how to hopefully fix.

Okay. But even if I am wrong about what is going on here, it does no harm to re-install the GRUB boot loader even if it doesn't need it. That is, if it's done correctly. So good luck to everyone with this. Anyway, here is the thread were I recently got the idea that a hung system at GRUB time with only a blinking cursor is related to the old and well-known "GRUB _" thing...

In that case, re-installing GRUB worked. So for now, I'm viewing this as just a new variation and manifestation of and old well-known thing.

P.S.: Lately, people have also been describing black screen hangs (so to speak) well after GRUB is finished and during the time that the kernel is loading or later when the system is spinning up (so to speak). Obviously, re-installing GRUB for that would be folly. So with these hangs at a black screen and nothing else except maybe a cursor, it matters were along in booting it occurs. You will know the difference I think.

Thanks again for posting this. After installing an F11 update, I had the won't boot/blinking cursor problem. I booted off the Fedora install DVD, selected Rescue Installed System, followed your instructions for reinstalling GRUB, problem fixed.
