will firefox work? maybe for the html files and possibly the xml, I don't know what a mtl file is.
just type the location of the file in the address bar
~/myHTMLfiles/webpage.html
might not like the ~ so you would need /home/myusrname/myHTMLfiles/webpage.html

Re: viewing xml, mtl, html files under fedora
these were file saved under windows xp prof internet explorer 8 in the format that
the ie saves them.
firefox or the others availabe under linux list them not in a readable form but as
a text file with all the formatting commands. should windows internet explorer files
be readable in linux with firefox, etc?
thanks

You might try Kompozer (in the repos). It is a WYSIWIG web page editor. It opens files in PREVIEW mode as well as formatting mode.

There's a Firefox addon that allows you to open up and view MHT archive files saved by Internet Explorer: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8051/
Maybe that's what those files are but with their extensions renamed?
