Wow! I'm stunned! This is great, but dont start dancing around just yet. I believe MS has legal recourse here and could probably still sell while an appeal was held. I do not imagine they will be pulling product off of shelves anytime soon. Still...$290 mil in fines! That is great! I love it.

No more Windows updates for that Judge! Kind of hard to understand why this didn't make bigger headlines elsewhere.

There is a report of it on the BBC website (that is "British Broadcasting Corporation" for those that don't know ). So, the story is out there....

I hope I'm wrong but i4i's website leads me to think they're just another oppertunistic ip speculator. But I still see joy in their sorrows.

Well, I am speechless on this one.
Apparently MS will have to knuckle under this time.
Thanks,
Joe.
EDIT: An alternative course of action for MS would be to drop OOXML and fully embrace ODT. They are supporting the later anyway in Office 2010.

The verdict was returned "earlier this year... in a jury trial". This is a bench ruling that merely adds various damages and costs, plus the injunction.
Got to wonder why this didn't generate more press upon the initial jury verdict....
V
P.S. Plus: there appears to be an "escape claus" to avoid the injunction.

If you want to get "heavy", Groklaw has an interesting article, with lots of legal mumbo-jumbo...

People tend to think about patents from the perspective of the owner. Yay! Megabucks! I hit the lottery! But think about it from the perspective of the public. You get to pay more now for Word or you can't use all of its intended functionality.

I'll just keep on using <custom><xml>for whatever I please...</xml></custom>. Let the big boys fight over it while I swing happily in the trees....

MS has done some neat things with 2007. But they'll just appeal and settle anyway. I think the ruling is more symbolic than anything else.

You can say that again.... I was looking for a copy of Office that includes Access (won't go into details as to why...) and saw that it costs R4999 (US$602.42) around here.
Nothing compares...
Edit: Sorry, I just found a special offer - R3,834 ($475.83). I'm not allowed to install it on more than 1 PC, though....

Yeah, evil though MS may be, in this case I think the doodie heads are the other people--sound pretty much like patent trolls.
Not to mention, as Adrian's referenced article points out, this only hurts just about everyone.

Hey, if you can get away with using anything else then great! But sometimes you just have to pay the price. Lucky thing is that most businesses or universities are going to let you use this program for free. If you need it for school chances are good that you can get it for a trivial amount. I paid $18 American for Office 2007 Enterprise edition.
In this case you get what you pay for.
