Networking local machines fails

This machine has Fedora11 x64 and I am trying to connect to another windows machine.
If I go to Places > Network > Windows Network I get "failed to retrieve share list" <no paste!>
I saw the bits about nss-mdns which wasn't installed.
I have now installed v0.10 and restated everything with no improvement.
Any hints on what to do next?. Thanks
Ralph

P.S. Admin>network>DNS persists in using the router name as search path not my domain, if that is relevant.

Hi,
Thanks, Yes I can get the web fine and also ping the machines. I just can't access disks.

As I was going back to find the evidence for what I did : http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=226393
I noticed the bit about hosts, so just about to try the /etc/nsshare.conf change. Commentting out line don't achieve any link to windows machine.
I notice that that file gets altered by something. There is a .bak version but changing the main version with what is in there doesn't work.

This shows rhe original post in the link above is a real problem and the scottro reply is for a different problem.

So what is next. Resolve...

Regardless of the need I always add the ip address / host name of all the networked computers to /etc/hosts. Seems to help immensely.

probably a good idea

but doesn't work, thanks anyway

more /etc/resolv.conf produces :

# Generated by NetworkManager
domain Belkin
search Belkin
nameserver 192.168.2.1

My windows domain is not Belkin and I cannot change it - I've tried . Is this a clue?.
Going to look at bugzilla and try unix to unix wit the above changes later.

I'd bet. My nameservers are from Comcast as is my domain name, hsd1.ma.comcast.net.

The Belkin entry in /etc/resolv.conf may be a blind alley.
My 32bit machine running Fedora10 has it for search but no domain entry and can reach the windows shares.

64bit Linux machines can ping by IP address but not by hostname and do not put their own hostname in the router DHCP.
(they recognise their own!). They cannot see the win network.
Is it a 64bit machine to router problem?. All web access is fine.

More info

I have noticed I can ping host.workgroup but ping host says it is unknown server.
Now this F10 32bit will not look at windows network boxes through places>network.

I think I need to start attacking the conf files but will the admin tools not just overwrite them again?.
Thanks for any help.
Ralph.

Some improvment

I have played with some firewall settings because there were none set - no boxes ticked in admin>firewall.
That adds this machines public files to the places>network bit but not the link to Windows network.
I set IPsec & mDNS, can anyonesay if there are others I need for his problem please?.
Thanks,
Ralph.

Some improvement

Well I have managed to connect to a vista system, but not yet to the XP one.
It seems to be that you have to be logged on to both machines with exactly the same userid at the same time. It isn't sufficient to use an id that exists but isn't in use.

Probably needs putting in documentation...

Will try disk mount later. Is it 'mount name:device' or 'mount //name:device'?.
Ralph.
