is fc1 running ok for you now? if so you should wait because whats available now is the fc3t2 (is beta) official will be release at the end of october.
if you plan to upgrade do a backup of you data.

Sure you can upgrade to Fedora Core 3 without needing FC2. Install via yum, apt, doing a fresh installation or an upgrade installation. If you have data that you need, upgrade would be prefered. It would be wise to do a fresh installation actually. Backup all your important data then proceed with the fresh installation. This way you can prevent any of the problems that you may encounter as compared to doing an upgrade installation. Hope I have answered your questions.

sayeeth,
remember an upgrade will take longer then a fresh installation.....twice as long.

imdeemvp,
Not necessarily, depends on your data actually. Plus I suggested backup + fresh installation.

I would only recommend an upgrade if you had a very "vanilla" system. i.e. you stuck to all of the official Fedora packages, livna.org packages and fedora.us paclkages. Otherwise your more likely to run into conflicts.
imdeemvp you may also notice that andyalean did not want to upgrade to the Test version.

here is my upgrade route... it works fine
rh8 -> FC1 -> FC2T3 -> FC2
on a seperate partition FC3T1 -> FC3T2
i store all my data on a completely different HD, i find that safer, as I am always upgrading and trying experimental stuff
