HP P1006 flaky

I've got a brand new P1006 and am having problems on 64 bit fedora:
I set it up using the hp-setup utility
I can do test pages ok, but then I get message on the gnome screen that says "the printer Deskjet may not be connected"

I'm also getting this in /var/log/messages:
