Don't know about yahoo, but I know Skype works with Linux.

Have you tried using wine?

Pidgen and kopete (bad spelling?) are good clients. Don't know if they support voip but I just portforward my router to ekiga. Dimdim's good for conferencing but overkill for most.

Skype and Ekiga are the native linux answer. If you install Wine, you can also use Ventrilo. It works, but depending on your hardware/system performance, it could be somewhat choppy.

Probably pidgin and kopete don't have the option of voice chat.

I'm using GYachE.
It boasts the same features that Yahoo has. And although I've never tried voice chat with it. This is the only yahoo messenger program for linux that I found uses webcams. And I can see the option for voice chat here too. I just haven't tested that part myself yet.

They might support VoIP, but I'm not sure about the Yahoo connectivity. I guess if he needs something like Yahoo messenger there are a lot of options, but as for using the yahoo ID, I don't know.

There is a web version of it though: http://messenger.yahoo.com/platform/web/
