Change UID Gnome Not booting

Gents

I have just changed the userid for my user and its thrown gnome into a spin.

i chown -r my home directory to reflect the new userid and also updated the /tmp/orbit-username , again to reflect the username. ( i saw a post about this /tmp/orbit-username elsewhere)

Gnome provides the login screen but complains about a "gnome_segv" and "gnome-settings-dameon"

its definatly something to do with permissions as i can login as root but don't know where else to look to update, any ideas ?

Mpoyser,

How did you go about changing your userid? Did you just manually edit your /etc/passwd file, or did you do it some other way? Also, the "normal" userid for the first non-root user on a Fedora system is usually 501. What did you change yours to?

With a little more info, we should be able to fix this.

thanks for your help Jim

I changed the userid using the vipw in /usr/sbin. I had to change the userid to fit in with the internal network schema to 109.

I have even added the user in question to the root group but still denada.

i believe it is a permissions issue but can't find the correct files to change , if i create a new user i can log in to gnome fine ? the problem exist with the existing user. also tried deleteing the /home/user/.gnome and .gnome files but didn't make any changes either.

Mike

I found the file in the end !

in /etc/gdconf-username

and the permissions on that file were set to 777. Apparently though according to /var/adm/messages it needs to be set to 700. why ? i do not know.

but after changing to file to the 700 permissions everything is fine

Similiar problem in FC5

Hi,

I wanted to use NFS to mount my home directory (and others in FC5) on my Mac.

I decided that the easiest way might be to change my uid on FC5 to match the
uid on the Mac.

I chmod'ed my home directory, fixed the passwd, shadow, and group file and then
rebooted.

Gnome failed to shutdown properly and on the reboot it refused to start. There where
a number of messages on not being able to access files in tmp.

I cd'ed to tmp and chowned everything there that belonged to my old uid and
rebooted.

This time the reboot succeeded....I hope I don't find some more "gotchas"

Jerry
