Disable console framebuffer at boot

Hello,

I have a computer that ran Fedora 10 just fine. Now I find multimedia and switching to console vts can lock up the display where the magic sysrq doesnt work nor does crtl-alt-x. I can switch VT's when I am running pandora (flash application) but everything stops and starts again when I return to the desktop. This is supposed to be a multi-tasking system. Other multimedia apps will freeze the desktop (totem playing an mpeg for example).

I can ssh in from another machine, switch to run level 3 and then back to run level 5 but I get no gdm or desktop.

The difference is there is a framebuffer device used which gives me a 1680x1050 console which is kinda cool but when I use the console I dont really need that sort of real estate.

What I want to do is disable the console frame buffer and let Xorg use the intel driver directly as I believe the video instability is X using the framebuffer driver.

How can I disable the framebuffer?

This is a feature of Fedora11 and can be turned off with the nomodeset parameter to the kernel.

I've tried that but when my gnome session loads it kills the X server when compiz loads...

Any ideas on that?

More info:
switching to a console vt (<ctrl><alt>2 for example) randomly kills my gnome session and gdm comes back up
