Acoustic transducers: speakers
Hi all
This is not a terribly technical question but,
What kind of speakers are you using and how do they sound?
I'm just looking for a good sounding system for the computer...loud, clear, low distortion, etc. I have a Sound blaster live 5.1 card. Doesn't matter if the speakers are 5.1 compatible or just a good sounding stereo set, I'm just curious as to what kind various users have experience with and how they sound. The cheapies I have now are fairly lame and I'm looking to upgrade...nothing like some good old Grand Funk while playing with my linux box to keep things in perspective.
Thanks to all

I've got the Creative P5800 speakers at work, and they sound really good. Although I don't know if they can help GFRR They're kind pricey though.

I have the Logitec Z-640 5.1 surround sound system. they're ok. good base and satisfactory treble. the Z-680 however are supposedly the top of the line for pc speaker systems with their THX certification

Even though I'm really a newbie when it comes to Linux, I do know a few things about sound.
Instead of a computer store, I went to a hifi store and bought a pair of quite cheap bookshelf speakers. An old working amplifier is usually easy to find; I paid one beer (!) for a decent one. The system I have easily beats any computer speaker system for the same price...!
Of course, this only works for stereo; if you want 5.1 sound, it's will be expensive...

Thanks to all...
Lots of good suggestions...you've given me a good place to start. Hard to beat the major brands and I'll try and give the various contenders a listen. My ears are quite big and still fairly good for determining what kind of sound I like.
chrille: I actually bought a old Pioneer amp at a flea market about six months ago...cleaned up the controls and removed the dust and am using it with the DVD...you're quite right...it IS hard to beat...beautiful sound. Especially for $15.00 (Aussie), which works out to about $9.00 US.

Decision made; speakers purchased
After discussion with she who must be obeyed...I listened to and bought the Logitech Z-340's.
Only 33 watts (RMS) and 2.1 but BOY do they sound great! Especially compared to the no-name cheapies I was using. The sub woofer is turned almost all the way down but provides plenty of "floor" and compliments the satellite units nicely.
Again, thanks to all for the suggestions...my ears and I are quite happy now!
