F11 KDE desktop effects & ATI X300

Hello all,

I am using F11 KDE with an ATI Radeon Mobility X300. When I try to turn on desktop effects it does not work -- I see the drop shadows of my windows, and if I move my cursor over a window a region around the cursor is drawn and then erased. Without desktop effects everything works fine using the open source "ati" X driver. Is it possible to get desktop effects with the open source ati drivers for X300.

I am aware that the proprietary ATI drivers no longer support my video card, so installing those is not an option. However, when I tried Ubuntu 9.04 on this same machine, desktop effects did work using the open source ati drivers. Is there a reason that desktop effects under KWin do not work? Is there a workaround?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.
