GeForce 7300 NVIDIA

I have installed Fedora 11 to check if it still has the same problem with NVIDIA as F10?

After install I found the max screen resolution was 1024x736, but I wanted to take full advantage of my monitor's resolution as 1280x1024 (Yusmart 19")

I installed the NVIDIA driver from their site, 185.18.14.

Now I can't get a resolution above 640x480 whatever I try.

How can I uninstall the NVIDIA driver and is there a better driver available?

You can do like this as root to uninstall:

Code:
# sh ./NVIDIA-Linux.....pkg1.run --uninstall

Yes, add rpmfusion and do this:

Code:
# yum install akmod-nvidia
then, you will have the almost latest nvidia driver.

My GeForce 6200 works perfectly with it!

Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips marklf, but nogo?

I attempted to uninstall the NVIDIA drivers and the process appeared to go through the motions, then the PC displayed an error indicating a faulty PCIE card. This is not the case, since it works OK in a different PC and after re-installing Fedora 11, I'm back to the original operation. (before the installation of NVIDIA)

The next step was to install your yum package. This went through the motions again then reported "No package akmod-nvidia available."

I am a fan of Linux, but when the installation of drivers etc., becomes a problem I can understand why Windows gains more and more power, especially when the user is not allowed to log on as root.

Well, sorry if I haven't made it clearer: You should add rpmfusion repo before you can install nvidia driver with yum.

Go and check this:
http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

Hi marklf,

I did add the repo you suggested, downloaded the driver and installed it.

All seemed to go well and I had a good display, however, when checking the resolution I found it was 1024x768. This was the maximum I could achieve with the default installation and this hasn't allowed any increase to 1280x1024 with the new driver?

I also noticed that the driver version was 185.18.14, which is what I installed originally, although my installation stuck at 640x480.

I did try to detect the display with the driver, but this didn't help.

For your info I am also running my display with a parallel Windows PC, via a KVM and it is using 1280x1024.

Any ideas?

Please post the entire contents of file /var/log/Xorg.0.log to http://pastebin.com and post a link here, so we can all see why the NVidia driver is rejecting other screen resolutions.

Probably it mis-detected the monitor, and assumed very conservative hsync and vrefresh values, but let's find out for sure....

V

P.S. It would also help a lot if you had the hsync and vrefresh ranges from the MFR specs available....

Hi Hlingler,

I have posted the log file on pastebin.com under the name brutonpc.

On quickly scanning the file it appears that the monitor hasn't been detected, which may be why there is a problem?

Details of the monitor are:
Manufacturer: Yusmart
Model: 198YP-A
Type: L19C
Year of manufacture on rear: 2005

I have attempted to get details from the Web site, but there is no info. (www.yusmart.net) I have no other info.

Thanks,

Phil.

I can't find it - need a URL.

Also, in the meantime, create a xorg.conf file as described here, if one does not already exist: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...06&postcount=2

EDIT: Is this it? http://www.computermonitors.org.uk/y...gital-monitor/

The frequency range in horizontal side of the monitor is 30 to 80 kilo Hertz. The frequency range in vertical side is 50 to 75 Hertz.

Yes, the monitor is listed in http://www.computermonitors.org.uk under the name Yusmart 198YP. The freq. range is Hor 30 to 75 KHz and Vert 50 to 75 Hz.

The is an xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 and this doesn't show direct mode resolutions. Under Modes it has "nvidia-auto-select." For some reason it doesn't seem to be able to detect the max resolution?

Hope this helps.

I still haven't found your Xorg.0.log, nor a link to it, so I do not know if the monitor is being correctly detected, nor why the desired screen resolution is not available.

However, you can edit (as root user or sudo) the existing xorg.conf file to add the MFR's specified hsync and vrefresh ranges, like so:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
[...]
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Unknown"
        ModelName "COMPAQ FS7600"
        HorizSync 30.0 - 80.0
        VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
        Option "DPMS"
[...]
EndSection
You will need to re-start the X server, or simply re-boot the PC, to apply such a change. Then see what happens....

Hi All,

I believe I have found the cause of my troubles.

The main problem was that the screen was not recognised and whatever changes that were made in the xorg.conf file seemed to be completely ignored.

By directly connecting another LCD monitor to the Linux system all resolutions were immediately available.

Since the original screen was connected via a Dynamode KVM I can only assume that the screen properties could not be detected through it. Normally, to cut down desk space, I have three Windows PCs and my Linux PC connected via this KVM, but now I will have to think again.

However, thanks for the assistance given so far.

Phil.
