How to create a bootable DOS CD iso image, under F8 or F10

I have downloaded a bootable DOS iso CD image that I have burnt to CD and can boot from.

I need to add more disk checking utilities to the CD iso image.

The DOS disk checking utilities are designed to be run from a floppy disk, but my laptop does not have a floppy drive, so CD-ROM is an alternative, if I can remaster the existing iso image file?

Can I mount the DOS iso file and then add other programs to it, and then remaster the updated iso, and make a new CD-ROM to boot from with the added tools?

Re: How to create a bootable DOS CD iso image, under F8 or F10

Someone else has already solved the problem of how to boot MS-DOS programs from a CD-ROM disk:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/started.html

http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/

Not read it all yet, but Ultimate Boot CD works well, so I guess this is the way to go?

Re: How to create a bootable DOS CD iso image, under F8 or F10

I use Bart's PE for maintenance and repair of XP. It's basically an XP Live CD. Very useful. The UBCD is based on Bart's PE, and it's kinda hard for me to think of the two separately. But those are live systems and sort of sophisticated. And the Bart's PE used to have a complex set of instructions to create it (better now, I think).

But if all you really want is a DOS boot CD with some basic simple DOS utilities on it, then one way to create that is to create it first as a floppy disk and use that floppy disk as a boot image for a bootable CD project (that is otherwise blank) in K3b. I've done in Nero, too. It should boot to an A:\>_ prompt from which you can list and run your utilities.

If you don't have a floppy drive (and you probably don't since you started this thread), then you could download a DOS floppy image and use that as the boot image in K3b. Then add your DOS utility files to the CD project and burn it. Now, this exact idea I have not personally done, but I think it would work.

Re: How to create a bootable DOS CD iso image, under F8 or F10

I have used BartPE in the past, also VistaPE. Both are alright. But, I don't see very much that you can do from these that you can not do from Fedora. I have a bootable USB thumb drive with persistance that I can boot almost any PC into and I can load what ever software I need to into it.

As for a DOS version, I have used WindowsPE in the past. I am fairly certain that you can add software to
WindowsPE, but I am not 100% sure since it has been quite a while since I have used it. I have also use freedos. I am sure there are ways to install your software if you google it. However, I am not sure what version of DOS you are using, but I believe that some of them do not work well with NTFS. Like I said, though, it has been a while since I have used a bootable DOS.
