Grub2
Hey all. As well as being a Fedora fan I'm an Ubuntu fan. This morning I installed Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 2 on my multi-boot laptop. Now I'm in a slight bit of trouble. This release of Ubuntu brings with it grub2. With grub2 there is no more /boot/grub/menu.lst. There is, however, /boot/grub/grub.cfg, a file that is not to be edited manually. So, after googling and searching the Ubuntu forum I haven't yet been able to figure out exactly what I need to do to add Fedora and the other OS's to the boot menu. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with grub2? I believe that it is being used with other debian based distros for their alphas and betas also so I thought I may have a chance of bumping into someone. Anyone?

Nah. Thanks for the reply Dan but I got annoyed once I found out that Evolution wasn't going to work, blew it away and re-installed 9.04. For what it's worth, grub.cfg is nothing like what you or I are used to seeing. Very different.

Yep. I can be very impatient sometimes. I searched Google and the forums for answers and looked at the grub pages too. Nothing. Then the Evolution thing pushed me over the top. I was standing outside the window on a ledge for a short while

Hi,
Yes. GRUB2 is a VERY different program from GRUB 1 and has a completely different configuration file

Hey Rahul. Thanks for the link. I do want to learn about it. I'll use it to become a Grub2 legend, at least in my own mind.

Well, there seem to be 132 files in /boot/grub in grub 2. Sigh, I might just switch to GAG for anything I'm multibooting. I don't see a config file, though I assume one is around somewhere.
Looks like it'll be a pain to configure after the fact--that is, if you want to add an O/S afterwards.
Ah, apparently there's an update-grub script that will generate a config file.

Oh well, I only multiboot on a few machines now, mostly I use VMs these days.

i had the same problem and fixed it like this.
in ubuntu 9.1 do
sudo apt-get install grub
sudo update-grub
this will install grub and generate a menu.lst file. than download "Super Grub Disk" from this location and burn it to a cdrom
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/index.php?pid=5
reboot your machine from the cdrom and use Super Grub Disk to reinstall grub to the MBR of your hard disc. then you can reboot into fedora and copy the boot entry from your ubuntu installations menu.lst to your fedora installations menu.lst. now you will be able to boot into ubuntu if you choose and your grub will be restored.
hope this helps

Re: Grub2
I have been trying to change boot parameters with grub2-mkconfig and grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2.cfg only to find out my settings aren't being saved. After looking into a solution myself, I found out there are one too many 'grub' files around my system:
grub2.cfg on /boot
grub.cfg on /boot/grub2
grub2.cfg on /etc
grub on /etc/sysconfig
grub on /etc/default
grub on /etc/bash_completion.d
Can somebody provide a SOLUTION on how to remove unnecessary configuration files so that the one being read gets updated with the user's changes properly?
Thank You.

From looking at my F17 install:
/boot/grub2.cfg - Not present. As far as I know, that file shouldn't be there. However, there are grub and grub2 directories in /boot that should be there.
/boot/grub2/grub.cfg - That's the one that's built by grub2-mkconfig and grubby. You definitely need that one.
/etc/grub2.cfg - A symbolic link to /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. I'm not sure who uses it, but it should be there.
/etc/default/grub - Stores settings used to build /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. Edit this file to make changes to /boot/grub2grub.cfg by running grub2-mkconfig.
/etc/bash_completion.d/grub - Functions related to bash_completion for grub2. Leave it alone.
There are a number of files in /etc/grub.d that control how the grub.cfg file is built by grub2-mkconfig, as well.

Re: Grub2
The issue is that grub will look for /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
You made it /boot/grub2/grub2.cfg
Redo your change with -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg and it should be fine.

Re: Grub2
Thanks for pointing me back to the OP, smr54, you're almost right. The grub2-mkconfig command CarlosMosca used actually created that unnecessary /boot/grub2.cfg file. Your solution is correct, however.

Re: Grub2
Actually, the OP of this reboot of the thread should have started a new thread, rather than revive this one which had its last post in 2009.
