Dell i8000 display problems

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to install Fedora Core 2 on a Dell Insprion 8000. The laptop has an nVidia GEForce 2Go. This is the first time I install Linux (except for a Dell Desktop with RH9, but I didn't have to do anything )

So I've read about all the nVidia driver stuff. I've seen Picomp's(?) explanation about how to install the nVidia drivers, but:

a) Someone told me if I compiled my own kernel, it would be a pain to update later.

b) I don't want to recompile, because I almost have it working (read on).

I've selected an unprobed monitor and generic VESA drivers. X loads fine, but I can only see Fedora in a small window in the center of the screen.

I've tried to tweak the modelines using other people's XFConfig files to no avail.

Any ideas?

So this is wierd:

I had modified the xorg.conf file with some suggested modelines and it didn't work. So I overwrote the xorg.conf file with the backup and shut down my computer.

Then I turned it on again. Same thing. I went into system-config-display (within X/gnome). Went I hit the resolution pull-down menu I had 1600x1200. I hadn't written that in the file, or seen it before (always got 800 or 640). So I selected it.

It asked me to restart X, I did and it worked. So apparently I had a 1600x1200 monitor. Here's my xorg.conf file:
