virtualbox or virtualbox ose

i'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what's the major difference between the two closed and open source virtualbox editions (other than one being open source)

i have been using virualbox on Fedora 10 and now freshly starting with Fed 11... i want to know what are the advantages of using one over the other?

i looked up on package installer (software add/remove) and there seems to be only virtualbox-ose readily available for adding... it comes with akmod-virtualbox-ose and other stuff...

does the akmod-virtualbox work like akmod-nvidia? one-off installation?

virtualbox-ose does not allow you to use usb devices (ipods, usb-sticks, drives, etc.) whereas the non-ose edition does. you can use 'autoten' to install the non-ose edition easily.

yeah, I suppose i should have said, virtualbox-ose is supported by fedora package maintainers, but you may as well go to

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

and get the fedora rpm. Recompiling the kernel module manually is hardly rocket science. (/etc/init.d/vboxdrv -setup)

One quick note, and probably safe to ignore--I found that on my lower end hardware, the rpm from Virtualbox.org didn't work that well--the virtual machines would freeze, not install at all, etc.

I think it was some oddball problem. At any rate, I very easily fixed it by uninstalling and downloading their all distro download, and running that.

Just mentioning it in case you do have issues with their rpm--on the other hand, when I posted about it, only one other person in these entire forums had an issue even remotely resembling t, so you can probably ignore this post.

it is also really convenient to just grab it from dangermouse's autoten app, it installs VB-non-ose automagically.....
