Sound sped up on F11 LiveCD

While running the F11 Live CD, all of the audio files that I play (using either Rhythmbox, Totem, etc.) are sped up by a small factor (and thus slightly higher in pitch too).I was about to do a fresh install but this stopped me.

Has anyone else experienced this or know if it could be caused by running from the Live CD somehow?

Hi Nycthbris,

What sound card are you using? It sounds like the sample rate is too high (possibly 48000?). If your using KDE, go into the kmix preferences and look for a setting called clock rate (I'm not on a linux machine at the moment so I cant remember where it is exactly, sorry!), this is the sample rate, try changing it to 44,100. I dont use Gnome, but there should be a sample rate option in sound preferences there too. Hope this helps.

yeah, that was my first thought too, some kind of sampling rate SNAFU. If you can find a sound file that's at 48KHz to start with, see if that plays back OK.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

Here is the lspci output about my sound card:
Code:
[liveuser@localhost ~]$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

As for the sampling rate, I could not find any options to change it in the Gnome UI's, however the pulseaudio default configuration says the default sample rate is 44.1kHz (default-sample-rate).
Code:
[liveuser@localhost ~]$ pulseaudio --dump-conf

lspci isn't terribly useful. what's good for analysing sound issues is the output of 'alsa-info.sh --no-upload' .

i have the same problem but with slowing down

i think i have the same soundcard as well
Code:
[ike@dot ~]$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

i've heard solutions involving turning off multi rate locking, but i've never seen it as a switch and i've never seen anything in the gui or alsa mixer that allows for default sample rate changing

i'm new to linux...

I think I've found what the problem is. I rebooted into Arch Linux (which has working sound) and ran alsa-info.sh, then rebooted into the Fedora Live CD again (audio was even more sped up) and ran alsa-info.sh a second time. It seems F11 is incorrectly setting the digital to analog conversion (DAC) value for my soundcard driver.

Initial F11 Live CD run:
Code:
!!AC97 Codec information

ADC resolution : 16-bit

Arch Linux (with working sound):

So now the question is how to I change it to the correct value?

Ack, nice catch. That sure looks like the problem. Unfortunately I'm not quite sure how that value gets set. Can you file a bug on the issue, including all the alsa-info.sh output from Fedora and Arch, and explaining your diagnosis, and give me the bug #? I'll make sure it gets triaged appropriately. Thanks!

this is no good solution but for some reason when i did a fresh install and then used dandermouse's autoten program to setup some codecs and crap my sound worked.

i'm not even sure if it's possible that the program is related but my sound is at the correct speed now.

that doesn't necessarily sound like the same problem.

Filed a bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=505464

My main concern is if the settings will carry over after installation, but I'm not sure if there is any way to determine that. Maybe I should use the install DVD instead?

well it's a heavily related issue, i have the same odd sample rate output showing up with DAC. autoten wasn't probably related i just mentioned it as i ran that first off instead of configuring it like my other computer (audio works fine on that one) first. sorry if it sounded like i found a solution, it was more a coincidence i found interesting.

i still need a solution that is sensible.

has any alsa plugins for sample rate conversion shown any promise. like adding something to asound.conf?
