GBC HSDPA modem unrecognized

For F10 patched.

I'm in Honduras. The local cell / Internet provider that covers Guatamala, Honduras, El Salvador, uses an HSDPA modem marked "GBC" and is also known as the "China Bird". It's a black usb stick that looks identical to the option unit, but its definitely not an option modem.

lsusb lists it as 1c9e:1001 with no text after it.
It automounts as a disk drive with typical Windows software on it. Nothing ever shows up in /dev/ttyUSB*, as I believe the disk mount causes it to not try mounting it as a modem. Dismounting it also does no good.

Any ideas?

They normally mount as /dev/ttyACM0. If you run 'dmesg', after you connect it should show up where it has been mounted.
Code:
usb 3-1: USB disconnect, address 2
usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=0421, idProduct=00e2
usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb 3-1: Product: 6650
usb 3-1: Manufacturer: Nokia
cdc_acm 3-1:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm
cdc_acm: v0.26:USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters
usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_ether
usb 3-1: bad CDC descriptors
usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_host
usb 3-1: bad CDC descriptors
usbcore: registered new interface driver rndis_wlan

This device shows up nowhere.

I checked dmesg, messages, and nothing appears.

I think that as soon as its mounted as /dev/sdc from /media/modem, that's it.

I've got 2 of these gadgets and they both do the same thing.

I bought a Merlin XU870 and it works fine, but spending $200 on something when the ISP "gives" you the GBC gadget as part of the sign up process is a bit tough to swallow. My wife needs an Internet connection and I'd like to get this piece of rubbish working if possible.

It works fine under Windows 2000 /XP/ Vista.

Strange there is nothing in dmesg.

If you plug the modem in after fedora has started it should be at the end of the dmesg output.

I upgraded to F11 and managed to get a bit further, but still can't get NetworkManager to cooperate.

I added a section to /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi for my modem and now I see ttyUSB0 thru 3 show up, but NetworkManager now complains:
found serial port (udev: hal:GSM)
ignoring due to lack of probed mobile broadband capabilities

lsmod, lsusb look good. wvdial uses the port but complains about

Anyone have any ideas as to how to debug this??
