Launcher app

I've been trying to find something like Quicksilver (on OS X) or AppRocket (windows) for my linux box. While I'm aware that linux does have wonderful indexing of binary paths, it's a bit of a pain to track down documents or things that I just don't use very much, and with a massive 120 gig SATA drive that is (for some reason) not using libata drivers, doing a find / -iname what.have.you* can take an inordinate amount of time.

Has anyone found any applications like these Launchers/Indexers I've mentioned?

Thanks,

jeremiah

Main Menu > Run (or <Alt><F2>) will get you a run dialog. Click the list arrow and it should show you many applications.

I usually just use the terminal to launch apps, or I'll butcher up a .desktop file if need be. I was looking for a feature more along the lines of the indexing that AppRocket and Quicksilver perform where you type all or part of a file name into the app and it brings up a list of possible matches. Since my HDD is an SATA that doesn't appear to want to use libata, it's somewhat slow to search and finds generally eat up my CPU for a good minute or two (despite it being a 3.2 p4).

Is there anything I could do, perhaps, to speed up find performance?
