yet another seagate drive...

Remember the TigerDirect barebones kit I built for my 14 year old Christmas day? He was just in here, said his drive was dead. Sure 'nough... I was hesitant to buy this kit because of the seagate drive, I have yet to own just one single seagate that did not crash on me within 6 months. I forgot all about this one...till tonight. It was the last operational seagate I owned, and it will be the last. WD all the way from now on.

Other than that this computer has been great though, all around a good deal. I will hit newegg in a few seconds and snatch up whatever WD is in the GB sweetspot, he doesnt really need anything over 80, but I will take as big as I can get. Just thought it ironic as we were just discussing hard drives and I was saying I have never had a WD go bad on me while I have had probably 8 or so seagates go belly up by this point. I mostly kept buying them because that was what was in stock locally, but no more. Enough is enough.

Wasn't there a report not too long ago about these drives? Still, you have a nice new paperweight

Dont know? But I have never had such a problem with a single product in my life. The funniest part is there are people with the exact opposite experience, seagate being reliable and WD being junk. I have been trying to figure this one out for years. I have had a serious number of computers in the last decade, I mean like over 20 desktops. Maybe more if you count the yard sale junk I used to pick up. Surely you would think I would have bought at least one good seagate? But no, I am not exaggerating, I have burned through every single one in less than six months each. I have nothing against the company, I wish them well. Just wish I knew why me...

Yeah, I have the same experience with IBM/Hitachi drives. I think I've mainly bought them and have had only one die on me so far. Others say they're rubbish and should be avoided like the plague....

Yup, I'm with you guys. I remember on some mailing list or other, someone was asking for recommendations. Some folks said Seagate is the best, others said, No, their terrible, Maxtor is reliable, etc., etc.

I've had pretty good luck with WD, probably better than with IBM, Seagate, or Maxtor. However, those are my older IDE drives.

Don't feel alone, Sean.

Looking back through a lot of junk when we moved, I found a set of notes I'd made up while looking for a new drive. The seagate in the printout had a big red X through it, and, "Does not play well with others" was written in the margin.

Of course, I've buried my share of WD's too. Maxtor, Hitatchi, Fujitsu work well here. I'm not really thrilled with IBM Travelstars or Samsungs. Just buried one of those two days ago. (After rescueing the head control magnets.)

I think most of my remaining 3.5s are all Maxtors. They seem to live the longest here. The 2.5s are all various manufacturers, and knock on wood, of those, only the IBM Travelstar has failed.

Go figure. Some people actually drive and enjoy Fords, too. <....>

Funny how drives vary so much for different people. I have had 4 seagate 300Gb sata's setup in raid 5 with mdadm and have yet to lose one in the 3 years I have had it running. Mind you this is only a home server and doest see to much action but I'm pretty happy with it.
