Sony Vaio a517m fedora 10 runs extremely slow and takes a long time to boot

I have installed fedora 10 on a partition on my laptop it runs so slow it takes almost ten minutes to access them menu and longer to access any options, as such I cannot load any programs or do anything with the OS, it also takes an extremely long time to boot up in the first place. I tried downloading the DVD version of fedora 8 to try another operating system but when I enter the disk it always returns the error unable to boot, I have used a version I obtained from a friend and a version I downloaded myself. I am very frustrated as I cannot get linux to work properly or at all in the case of fedora 8 and as such I cannot do anything with it. It takes many hours to download and then to install and I am at my wits end as I have no idea how to make it work.

If anyone has any advice is would be greatly appreciated.
