Cisco VPN connection

Hi,

just wanted to ask a small question... I've set up a VPN connection to my university and i installed and configured everything ok, cause I can connect without any problems...

Now that I'm connected I want my browser to run through the VPN tunnel created by the connection so i can access certain sites that are else inaccessible, but how do i force my browser (I'm using firefox atm) to do that?

When I'm on MAC of Windows OS, as soon as i connect with a VPN, all connection run through them. Fedora seems to ignore the VPN connection and just continues to use my home-network to connect to the internet.

So the basic question is: how do i use the VPN connection
I hope I explained it in a way you guys can understand. Thanks anyways for reading!

edit: i use FC10, kernel 2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686, fully updated system

I believe you should, open firefox and click on:
edit-preferences
advance tab
network tab
settings
choose auto detect for this network

That should do it

Cheers

here's how i do it..
First, offcourse I connect to my home network (wifi).. everything okee, i can acces Internet
Now, i activate the VPN... type in my account pass... everything okee again, in the menu bar a small keylock-icon appears over the wifi netwerk icon, stating that the VPN connection is active (it says so when i hoover over the icon and it displays "VPN connection 'VPNUGent' active"

but still... everything runs through my normal wifi connection

You'll need to setup route tables for the VPN'ed network.
You could do it manually.
If there is a dhcp service on the VPN you may be able to use:
dhclient IFNAME
where IFNAME is the vpn interface name.

As root the result of these commands will be a start.
su -
ip addr
ip route

If you feel the need, you can fake(edit) the public IP addresses. Not the ones starting with 192.168.x.x, 172.x.x.x ,10.x.x.x 127.x.x.x.
It's not much of a security issue either way IMO.

Another thought .... you can use NetworkMananger(NM) to manage a vpn too.
Right click the "signal strength" icon in the upper panel.

"edit connections" "vpn" tab, select "add".
THe rest should be obvious.
I use vpnc "manually" but I expect that NM will try to create a dhclient for you automagically.

Yeah i tried NetworkManager but then i run into the troubles described above; i can connect to the VPN but the connection still runs through the wifi network...

i fixed the problem by contacting the VPN owners who wrote a script to solve the problem... seems that i just needed to manually reroute the 'route' which the connection follows.

thanks tho :P
