Fedora 11- Sound fails, but when I run the test. it works -microsoft sound system 80

I have the microsoft sound system 80.
I log into kde. There is a crackly noise. It says their is no sound and it is falling back to pulse.
In system setting multimedia. I run the test on PulseAudio, PulseAudio sound server, default and HDA NVidia and they all produce no sound. The test for microsoft sound system works perftect.

At one stage I got very very faint sound when I use songbird music player.

I've tried using pulseaudio and pulseaudio sound server as the default, but I get no sound at all.

I don't want to disable the motherboard sound sound card because I need it for the microphone.
