PCI Card Not booting X

Hello All,

I have an NVidia PCI FX5200 with 128MB of memory and it will not boot X. I am running Fedora 9 with the RPMFusion, Amahi, and Livna repositories.

The CLI will run commands so I know that the installed has occured. For the life of me I can't get x to start.

I adhered to the following link when installing the RPMFusion Kmod and akmod repo's.

http://fedorasolved.org/Members/zcat/akmods

I am also getting the following from grep nvidia:

[root@localhost ~]# yum list | grep nvidia

i do believe this is the one you need to install
kmod-nvidia.i686 173.14.15-1.fc9.12

oops my mistake you DO have that one installed
" akmod-nvidia.i686 173.14.15-1.fc9.5 installed"
i missed the end of that .

but 128MB of ram, for the computer is not enough to run the gui .
Now if that is 128 Meg for just the nvidia card and you have MORE than 256 meg of system ram ( 512 is the least in reality but 256 is the very very min. ) than the gui should start

Did you use the gui or TEXT ONLY install ?
also running this ( what you did )
Quote:
[root@localhost ~]# startx
wont work
you need to be a normal user for "startx " to run

I used the GUI to install. The integrated video chip works fine with the gui whether I log in as root or as a user.

I have 1GB of memory installed, the 128MB is on the card. I got the card so that I could hook up the system to my tv for a mythTV frontend. I plan to stream the shows I record to my XBox 360 via UPnP through the Amahi repository.

I tried to start x via a user and this is what I got:

[Peter@localhost ~]$ startx

I believe this to be the same issue as before. although I may be wrong.

yes both are 3D chips.

How do I disable the onboard. I have gone into the boards BIOS and set it to where the PCI device is the primary adaptor. Is there a work around?

Your OS should be able to handle two video cards just fine. That is not the problem. I would guess that it has something to do with Fedora 10's new no xorg.conf guess the configuration on the fly method for setting up your graphics. The nvidia driver did not have a properly setup xorg.conf prior to writing it's settings so it didn't come out right. If you are well versed in xconfig options, you can write your own xorg.conf. I am not so I switched to CentOS. Happy to say SLI is runnin' fine.

you need to add the bus id to the settings in the xorg.conf
fedora is "seeing" the built in chip and noe "seeing" the 3d card
if you can post your xorg.conf we can help you edit it
--3d card --
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

How do I get the xorg.conf file? Sorry guys new to linux. Building a home server on a budget. I don't know how to edit the files or copy the files via command line.

I'm a newb you'll have to walk me through it. My local Linux users group said I need to SCP the file. what is that and how do i do it?
