Testing the Fedora 11 Installation Guide

    Hi, folks!

Every release, the dedicated volunteers in the Documentation team produce the Fedora Installation Guide, an exhaustive and detailed guide to installing Fedora. For Fedora 11, they have asked us in the QA team to co-ordinate 'testing' of the Installation Guide. By doing installations following the instructions in the Installation Guide, we can find issues in both the Guide and the installation process itself, and thus improve both.

So, I have written up an installation guide 'Test Case'.

As you can see, essentially what we'd like you to do is to take a look at the Fedora 11 Installation Guide as it currently stands, and try installing either Fedora 11 Beta or current Rawhide according to the instructions found in the Installation Guide. Report any problems you find - any bugs in the installer itself, or errors or missing information or bits where what's written in the guide doesn't correspond to what you see in the actual installer - to Bugzilla.

As this is a wide-ranging case which doesn't involve any particular component or developer, we aren't running a Test Day for this, but instead would like it to be an ongoing process throughout the rest of the Fedora 11 release cycle. Please, if you have the spare time and resources, try and take part in this testing! Please discuss any questions, problems or issues below. Thanks!

The F11 Installation Guide is great.
I think I could work my way through a remote server kick-start install from my work station and have the graphic installer popup on my Windows vnc viewer.

Anyone wanting to know how to make installing easier needs to read this.
It is a must read for newbies. (rinse, repeat, read again.)
    It even has pix.

Sorry to anyone who's already looking at this: I inadvertently included an incorrect link at first. The link to the current pre-release F-11 install guide was pointing to the finished F-10 install guide instead. I've now corrected this. Please click on the link again and you'll get the correct F-11 guide, in PDF format. Thanks!

OK, I'm in. I already have Alpha installed on a test box with all the updates, so I guess its really beta at this stage, however, I'll blow it away in favor of re-installing using the Installation Guide. This way I can hopefully provide some feedback to the writers and help them and the Fedora community in general. I've saved a copy of the installation guide and am currently downloading Beta. I'll play with it this weekend.

    installing versus upgrading

    Hi there:

I'm concerned that I'll lose my valuable emails, bookmarks; saving the look and feel of the desktop when upgrading?

    Thanks.

there's a 250 page thick guide to install fedora?

oh man! even opening it up with okular nearly takes as long as installing F11.....i am very impressed that there is so much to write about a process that is nearly perfect and n00b friendly to begin with. what's next.....a boxed version with this guide in print? :-)

Hmmm.... An installation guide. What a terrific idea. Kidding aside, I am the guy you love to hate. I download the live media, drop it in the CD drive and install. Used F6-F9 and loved F9 until the disk crashed. [I use old discarded hardware...] I never could get F10 to boot, let alone install. I was fearful of F11 but surprise surprise, it booted both Gnome and KDE the first time. I installed Gnome and the first time got a failure. Reinstalled and all went well until my NVIDA 5800 video card started complaining. I pulled the card and now the install is fine except the mouse pointer [USB MSMOUSE] has disappeared. I popped the dreaded W disk in to see if I broke something and nope - mouse pointer is fine. I must conclude that something in F11 clobbered the mouse pointer. The mouse actually is there and I can move around the screen but no pointer - not very user friendly.

I will keep poking around and see if it comes back. In the mean time, I love the display... It is faster than F9 and much faster than KDE... Network link worked out of the box...

digital: it's ok that there's no link to the f11 installation guide yet, as we don't want people coming across it just casually like that. and yes, I worked as Mandriva's community manager for nearly 5 years before I came to RH.

Very good document. Just for completion - is it possible to install Fedora 11 from a fedora 10 or another distribution using a chroot setup (similar to debootstrap for Debian based dists; or a stage/portage tarball for Gentoo)?

Especially when testing alpha/beta/preview/RC versions some users may find it useful to have a shared /home, /boot partitions with fedora 10 and re-install 11 on a separate partition. Being able to run the installation on a side terminal with chroot is useful in this usage model.
