Gah my University is insane

I just found out about 5 minutes before posting this that my school blocked Firefox on thier network..now it asks me to authenticate when I boot into the network os. (2k...) I dont understand why you would block a #### web browser...do an of you?

Ps. I dual boot xp on my school laptop so I don't really need to worry but its still silly.

what do you mean block firefox, from downloading, running, viewing their sites? keep sending service tickets complaining that they are forcing you to compromise your pc's security by running ie, and tell your firends to do the same. we will prevail.

well that was fast FireFox is not that complicated all it is, is an html interpreter they have no real reason to basically ban the browser when its actually more secure etc...but that would be common sense which apparently they don't have.

Ps. Basically internet access is blocked with Firefox beccause it asks me to authenticate and I can't authenticate at all. (it doesnt give an option to get onto the schools student network with the prompt.)

l know the M$ guys at work and that is how they think, they will only use M$ related software to elimated extra time of how another browser works.

how do they blcok a certain browser. there is an extension that allows firefox to emulate ie name so sites will load. i belive UserAgentSwitcher is what you want. just one more way to put an end to administrator/governmental cencorship. unfortunately, this won't help firefox in the numbers race.

I'm not sure how its being blocked but I will test out the extention next time I boot into 2k (Possibly not until long after I forget about this..I really only use 2k to print.)

I heard that newer machines at PSU are coming with Firefox preinstalled while I was in an irc channel....DOWN WITH INTERNET EXPLORER!!!

That is amazing - so if need to access the internet, you can only do that from a Windows OS at your university? That is sad and lazy administration

Methinks me chucked my knoppix cd besides I prefer to boot from the hdd..its a bit of a hassle screwing with the boot record though. [I destroyed mine on my school laptop so many times when I was first testing linux.]

Er, there's one thing everyone seems to have forgotten: it's the university's system(s). They have every right to adminsiter it how they wish, whether you personally agree with that decision or not. If they choose to implement certain policies, that's their choice.

ehhh, not when those policies have a security risk on the well being of my system. And especially when its obvious when admins are just being lazy.

It's kind of like a catch 22.

You want to drive, you have to use my cars ...

**FINE PRINT**

My cars dont use seatbelts, airbags, treaded tires, or AC...oh, they are also slow.
