More MadWifi Issues

Call me crazy, but I like to test my network often. Until recently, I've been doing so on my old Ubuntu 6.06 laptop... the problem is It's too slow (1.06 GHz single Core ), and old, (designed for Win 2000) to really be effective any more. So, recently I bought a new laptop... one with a Dual core Processor, and twice the speed. Anyway, I'm running Fedora Core 10 X86_64 on it. My problem is as follows: Although I do have MadWifi installed, for some reason, I still can't put my Atheros based Netgear WPN511 into monitor mode. (in the Network configuration window, it says "Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+" I'm not sure what it means but I'll put it in in case it helps) does MadWifi not work with Fedora? if not, is there a Fedora 10 (X86_64) alternative? Thanx for your help

UPDATE:
having reinstalled fedora and getting internet set up, I can return to this problem (as it still exists)

I installed sudo and madwifi using autoten. Upon installing, I cannot connect to any AP regardless of encryption status (i could before). That's not too much of a problem.. I have another (built in intel) wireless that connects just fine. however. I cannot place my Atheros Card into Monitor mode. I'm reluctant to try putting my built in card on monitor lest it too screw up. so to summerize: After installing madwifi via autoten, I cannot place my atheros based wireless card into monitor mode (which was the point of installing Madwifi after all). any help wiould be Very much appreciated.

someone suggested I need to create a new device, but I'm not sure how to go about it and the link they provided (here) seems to be written for a different distro. and I'm not sure what the proper commands are
