unable to record sound using mic

Hi all,
I am using fedora10 on a Acer 4720 laptop.
I have not been able to record sound using a mic. I have a built in mic on my laptop. When I tap on it I can hear the sound on my ear phones but when I record a desktop session using record my desktop application I get a strange mechanical sound only.
I think I have to do something with the mixer controls .
Can someone guide me about that ?
thanks in advance
nik
